a little tick here and there isnt bad just depends on what you mean by tick...

How did the oil look on the dipstick? I'm willing to bet the oil wasnt changed regularly early on. Search on here and other forums about ways to get rid of tick using Marvel Mystery Oil and other additives (only real hope with out tearing it down)

I'd check for signs of HG going bad along with checking the rest of the fluids tranny included.

If I am buying a truck that I plan on keeping I'd ask to borrow it for a day and do a deep inspection including pulling the spark plugs and valve covers and seeing how the engine is running and if there is much in the way of sludge.

Just my 2c

Ticks can be a number of things. Sticky lifter (MMO might handle that) is one. Oil pump cracked is one, see photo. It will make enough PSI to turn off light, but not the 40 PSI you need at 2500 rpm. Unscrew oil switch and screw in pressure gauge to test. Slipped cylinder liner is another, usually comes from overheating the engine. No easy repair usually, may involve a process of machining the block for a "top hat" liner, or pinning the liner, or other practices.

You could easily be looking at $1700 in repairs or more. So why not arrange for an indy mechanic to look it over. An hour of his time could save you thousands.

the oil was a little dirty i removed the oil cap and theres a little buildup on the top of the valve little specs other then that it was bright n shiny inside. doesnt smoke other then that tick from the back left valve cover i say that because i tried the screwdriver to ear trick and it sounded up top more then down low tried both.

how much do the oil pumps crack on our vehicles? still has alot of power other then that tick the truck is solid i test drove a good 30 minutes 0-65 mph and nothing no shakes vibrations ect ect. ive worked on alot of cars and it sounds like a lifter is stuck and or the oil when warm loses some duribility like thickness and or like from syrup to liquid no the oil is not syrup it feels like 10w40/30 when cold.

If you buy a rover: personally I would go with the 1994-1995. They have less electronics to have go wrong. About the tick: I would test the oil psi cold at idle and at 2500rpm. Then when it is warm (needle is straight across, 9:00 position) at idle and at 2500rpm. See what the numbers are. I personally have spent countless hundreds of dollars trying to figure out what my ticks and rattles are in my engine and I can't figure it out. I am now in the mind set of "when she completely quits on me, then I will just replace it all" Rovers are a lot of fun. I would offer less for starters. Cash goes along way and if you can save $200-$400 by just offering less, why not? lol You can always add more! I would get a head gasket test kit from napa. It costs almost $50.00 but you can use it for ever. This would be helpful to knowing if the head gasket is bad or not. Also, take cap off radiator and look for crap in it. (BE CAREFUL, THE PLASTIC IS OLD AND BRITTTTTTTLE) Turn the engine on and open the oil cap, just let the engine idle and see how much smoke comes out the cap. If it a lot then that means the valves are bad. You should have some smoke but not a lot.
I own a 1995 Discovery 1, so if you have any questions on potential problems, pm me!

Awsome! I did run it with the oil cap off and not to much air was passing threw to be honest. Hg rarely go bad on the older disco 1's my friend had a disco 1 and still running strong at 297k when I last talked to him a month ago. I can't see this vehivle having minor to no problems and I'm **** about checking cars also thank u guys!

Not true, a top-hat can be fitted.

Go for it. From what I read you are mechanically inclined and the LR will keep you entertained. It's an awesome car and as such will demand some attention.
