re: Not true, a top-hat can be fitted.

Yes, and I would point out that process may exceed reasonable repair costs, for guys who paid very little to start with. There have also been posts around for pinning the sleeve (perhaps this is done below the range of piston travel on the bottom, not sure if it can be done in-the-truck, and there were some posts about a practice of using a punch to crimp the edge of the sleeve to prevent movement.

I will amend this and future posts, there is no way to know if the owner is planning anything from a brief affair to a frame off restoration. You are correct, it should be mentioned.

While doing all that maybe throw in a manual pressure test for the oil pump. If pan off be sure oil pickup is firmly mounted, in addition to clean. If you decide to do lower bearings in the truck, owner pedronz had a good write up posted on it.

As to oil, shoot for 40 as the last number, not 10W30, etc. And you can use standard filters, expensive filters, or a WIX jumbo 51459 filter that adds almost another quart of oil capacity. Draw back is micron rating, which is 25 - 30, but a human hair is like 80 microns. The best oil is changed frequently. Expensive oil left until next year is not a good idea. The diesel rated oils are designed for more cleaning and to keep soot (gunk) in suspension so the filter can grab it.

There are few topics that draws more opinions that brand of oil, which is understandable since most of us lean toward gear head. Too bad previous owners didn't keep up with the changes, they'd probably still be driving their Rover.

And if oil pan is off, there is an O ring behind the pickup mount. Some use loctite on the bolts to be darn sure they don't drop the pickup into the pan while throwing gravel 30 miles from the last paved road....

Might want to check the oil PSI before taking off the oil pan, in case pressure is so low that you need to look at bearings, which there have been write ups on for doing while in the truck.
