sorry to ask a dumb question but i keep seeing people post about gem engine or gem engine 96 disco. what are they referring to i can't find any thing searching.

GEMS is the engine management system. Bosh is the later D2 /Range Rover P38 system. 14cux is the earlier (pre OBD2) system.

Gems was engine management system that was used after 14cux and before Bosch
96 is likely noted to explain that it is fuel injected, as 94 & 95 d1 was sporting a dizzy

so I have two 96 discoveries, how could i tell the difference between the Bosch and the Gems visually?

Bosh didn't come out till mid 99. Both should be gems

Still gems just fi 96 as opposed to earlier 94/95

GEMS engine will have a big black intake sitting above and between the cylinder banks.

The Bosch engine does not.

Gems has aluminum plenum, Bosch is plastic, its noticable

Gems will say 4.0 or 4.6 on plenum

ok, so their is nothing special,its just what people call the engine management system that came on the 96-99 discoveries
