Oh no, it's that new guy
Hi all,
A few weeks ago, I purchased a 1998 Land Rover Discovery LE. Still very thrilled with having bought it, love driving it AND working on it--tho my mechanics' training begins with this Land Rover. It's been really fun to learn about this truck and just cars in general. This forum as well as a bunch of videos on YouTube really help to explain how stuff works.
I hope to try and do something similar in the near future.
Here's a brief history of my Disco 1 via CARFAX:

I'm sure I'll be getting to know some of you well as I have ALL of the TODO items on the High Mileage Service sticky to check off.

Glad I'm part of this forum! And if you made it this far, thanks for reading.
Take care.

Here's a brief history of my Disco 1 via CARFAX:
- Purchased in 1998 and sold in 2001 at auction and listed as a fleet vehicle with 50,000 miles.
- Purchased in 2001 and sold in 2012 through a dealership with 170,000 miles (This owner kept it for 11 years)
- Purchased in 2012 and sold (to me) in 2013 with 173,000 miles.
In that time, he/she serviced it through Land Rover and had the:
- Intake manifold gasket(s) replaced (2001)
- Rack and pinion replaced (2001)
- Brakes and rotors replaced (2006)
- Cooling system flush (2007)
- Replaced water pump (2012)
- Replaced serpentine belt (2013)
- It's had the typical brake checks, oil changes and emissions checked throughout this time.
I'm sure I'll be getting to know some of you well as I have ALL of the TODO items on the High Mileage Service sticky to check off.
So far, I've:
- Replaced the fuel filter
- Replaced the spark plugs (NKG Iridium) --though I'm thinking of going
- back to Champions since that's what the original plugs were--I can be persuaded to change.
- Cleaned the MAF Sensor
- Cleaned the throttle body
- Detailed the engine bay
- Detailed the interior
- Replaced the gas filler cap
- Band-Aid the headboard and liner
- All fluids are clean and at normal
All systems seem normal except:
- Exhaust manifold gaskets need to be replaced: New gaskets on the way from Atlantic British--this will be my first "real" work on the car, so wish me luck.
- Before changing the oil, I'm planning on cleaning the oil pan as well (gasket is on its way.) Love to see what's under there, then again maybe shouldn't, but I'm game.
- Code at P1447--Evap System Purge Valve Open or Short Circuit Fault
So far, I've cleaned out the hoses, cleaned the connections, blew air in and through the charcoal canister, replaced the purge valve with the Hyundai brand that I saw on another post. I'm guessing the leak is coming from one of the hoses as I've also replaced the gas cap. So at some point, that will need replacing.
Glad I'm part of this forum! And if you made it this far, thanks for reading.
Take care.
welcome and wow... my family tree doesn't go back that far.sounds like your just the type of person to lend the needed attention to one of these trucks. keep the overheating issues in check and rove on.
Welcome. Sounds like it found a good home.

I'm going to start sounding like a broken record, but I learned from experience.
Remove the trim pieces holding down the carpet at all 5 doors, pull up the carpet & padding, & look for moisture/rust. The padding retains moisture for ever.

This is the exact post I put on Nick98discos page. I am very much a newbie and thought my wrenching days were over, I was wrong. Along comes "The Black Hole" my 98 disco.
Here's the post: I recently bought a 1998 as well. What I can tell you is that you've landed in the right place. The sticky page is your Bible and when the senior guys speak listen. There advice will save a lot of heart ache in the end. Lastly be prepared to be in what I call a Disco state of mind. Your disco will require work, (had this epiphany while lying under it yesterday pulling the oil pan) so get in the mind set to save money and do it yourself. this group will get you through it.

Thanks guys.
I'll post as I go along if I don't find it here on the boards first.
The Camel Trophy vid, I must have seen 20 times already...Yes, expedition grandure.
No rack and pinion--no wonder it needed fixing
On my list of TODOs is to pull up the carpet and give the fuel pump a look and see what kind of rust and other headaches behold me.
And FLA Rover, I saw that post as I was lurking around.
Thanks!
