Not all cars come with built-in oil separators and not all cars necessarily need them, but they can be purchased as aftermarket items. And if you have the necessary DIY skills, you can even make one yourself. There are actually a number of different ways in which these oil and air separators can work. Probably the most common kind blows the oily air through a mesh filter. The oil droplets are trapped in the mesh while the air passes through. The most effective such filters are made up of microfibers, which can trap very small particles of oil.

Maybe some of my oil is slipping past the pcv oil separator and combusting (burning)

Ok, guys I opened up the intake manifold in an effort to get to my injectors, took the ram housing off and found that there was oil all over the air intake. I believe its burning oil through the air intake. So I took a look at my pcv and all there was was a hose with no filter, and no check valve. Amazing. Haven't had a chance to put it all back together though. Should I add a simple check valve or build my own pcv? Also there is another breather hose on the driver side valve cover should I put a valve there too? I don know if this will solve my problem but it may help.

The small line needs a separator, the larger hose does not. The larger hose allows fresh air to enter the crankcase and smaller one draws out fumes.

Ok thanks, so just to make sure the smaller one is the hose on the passenger side which needs a seperator and the lager hose is the one on the drivers side. And it does not require any valve at all. Correct?

Found this video to be very helpful in making a PCV Oil catch can. Looks like I'm going to home depot. :0
