thanks guys, i was pretty sure the skin was all aluminum. If i can bring myself to do this, i might be buying a couple gallons of tal-strip... I not sure about the airstream look yet, i would have to do something special to the skin

You can have my steelies after you pry them from my cold dead hands! lol!

I hope to have the old rubber off them and get them sand blasted and painted before winter.
One of my customers does restoration of classic cars so I'm going to talk to him and see if he will cut me a deal.

Are you trying to get rust or paint off the NATO wheels...cause if it's paint I have a friend that works a machine shop and he told me of a chemical they use to disolve powder coating and other finishes that strips it down to bare metal very very fast and leaves a smooth ready to paint, powder coat or whatever finish you like. I think he said it's like $40 for a bottle. I am gonna do my wheels with it but the wheels are way down on my Rover "to do lists". If you want I will get the name of it and wher you can get it and send you a PM, just let me know.

Yes that would be great.
The rust is not that bad and I think it can be wire brushed out.
And then I can have them painted and my rubber swapped over.
I will have to start a poll as to what color to have them painted once I am ready.
You guys can give me your opinions and then I will do whatever I want anyway. lol

I think you should paint them body color, like cars from the 60's and 70's.

Well you learn something new everyday. I am glad I have a D1 since I am in the aviation repair field, aluminum is abundant.

The very first Land Rovers were made from scrapped WWII fighter planes.
And they only came in one color, RAF Green, it was surplus paint and readily available so thats what was used.
