Radio - TAPE-TO-IPOD HACK?
Hi I was curious to see if anyone had managed to tie-in an auxiliary connection to the stock Discovery I radio by soldering connections to the main board for the tape input (mine is a 1997). I've seen other posts where others have done this via the CD input for the changer, however to my knowledge there is no AUX or CD input on my head unit.
A colleague managed to do this very successfully for a similar vintage Mercedes unit, where the 3 connections were soldered to specific points on the board (left, right, ground), and all he has to do is insert a random tape to activate the tape input, and rather than playing the tape, it takes the signal from the Aux device (IPOD via the 3.5mm plug). There happened to be tons of blogs with pictures and step-by-steps for this model Benz.
I would love to be able to do the same for my rover (no desire to ditch OEM head unit), however I am not an electrical engineer, and I'm not sure this job qualifies for the trial-and-error approach.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the advice Spike, I saw that company but was hoping to do it myself. I mean if they are doing it, then its possible, and likely fairly easy (that is once the trail has been blazed).
i know theres walkthroughs online to do this as ive seen folks with older 70s/early 80s vws doing this to some of the "period correct" tape decks. it was a decent amount of work and required taking the deck apart almost entirely.
probably more trouble than its worth for a discovery though, just get the tape adapter or a new deck.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'm on the fence about just cracking it open and having a shot at it--not sure about pulling the trigger. If I do I will probably end up just burning holes in the circuit board, but if I get it going I will document and post. Thanks
