Next you need a plasma cutter, large vise, pipe bender and a torch. - then you can fab nearly anything - including your rack....
1) Prolly need van gutter mounts. If you want to be trick..... take a look at the Camel trophy discovery's roof racks. There is a variant that utilizes the factory roof rack mount point (thru the roof) for the front and middle mounts and then utilizes a standard rain gutter type at the rear on each side of the rear door. Though I would imagine using 4 gutter mounts on each side would bare more load than the Camel type I mentioned.
2) as I understand a 2" (total) suspension lift is the most cost effective lift for these vehicles. Above that you start needing new linkage, double Ujoint front driveshaft etc..... - just things to keep in mind. These vehicles have serious articulation in stock form - 1st pic is mine bone stock. - 2nd pic - mine currently - 31.5" tires / 2" lift. A 2" lift only requires caster correction radius arms & extended brake lines (and obviously springs and shocks). Personally, I think a 2" suspension lift and 1" body lift would prolly suit the 34's (if not super wide) with some additional 'Camel Cut' trimming. (Again, I only have a 2" - someone else may have better info regarding taller lifts/tires). When it was stock I had no problem keeping up with lifted toyotas on 33's - my truck was referred to as boring b/c 'it just lumbers over everything'
I wouldn’t mind a 2 inch lift, but TBH, 2 inches isn’t gonna cut it for the wheeling around me. We have rocks taller than the hood on that thing. I’m gonna need 4-6 inches minimum. I mean bare minimum 4 inches.
we shall see tho. We shall see. I took my other D2 with a 2 inch lift and my buddies with a 4 and his 4 was barely enough for some of the stuff around us here.
ok yeah those are big *** rocks! My measly 2" lift is so not worthy haha
RTE has a 5inch lift....... for........ $7k- ouch!
Yeah, I’d love to have the cash to spend on it, I mean truly I do, but I’m saving for a defender my buddy wants to sell me, but I think I’ll go with 2 inch suspension, 2-3 inch suspension lift blocks, and 2 inch body spacers. That way I could just change a few other things and it not wreak havoc on the drivetrain. Thoughts?
2" suspension lift + 2" lift blocks = 4" total suspension lift = need for custom linkage.
Honestly, purhaps you just go with a full custom linkage and upgraded axles all together.
Like a 4 link kit, stronger axles, Coil overs - In the end it will prolly be less. You could source the axles from the junk yard and rebuild them. The custom 4 link may actually cost less than custom Rover linkage. The upgraded axles will forgo the weak points in the rover axles (axle shafts and (under extreme load) the ring can flex breaking teeth).
At the end of this (and with a lot of sorting of the suspension for drivability) you will have great articulation and a strong driveline..... Then LS swap that bitch! haha
I will say though..... I help my brother install a solid front axle and do 4 link suspension front and rear to a 86 4Runner - it took a lot of effort and time to turn that thing from a murderous tin can on 35's to something drivable.

I am mechanically inclined in the way that I can take literally anything apart and put it back together correctly, and I can look at simple things and understand how the work, but swapping an axle is probably out of my wheelhouse. At least currently. Isn’t that like extremely difficult to make work?

I was going down the rabbit hole of full blown built rock crawler haha.
Its getting the axle geometry correct and the research/trial and error getting to that point that is the PIA.
If it were me, do the 2" suspension lift first, maybe body lift to clear the 34's too. See what that gets you when you wheel. Then add the 2" spacers and wheel it gently (just dont drive at highway speeds like this). If that really delivers the difference you need for your application - then decide how to tackle the linkage/geometry.

6 hours later and the final coats of “Portofino red” Bedliner has been sprayed. Pretty happy so far. Unfortunately it says it’s going to rain tonight now which was not expected. Luckily this stuff hardens quickly. But here is an update!
Update. The rain ruined it. Idk what to do. Want to cry but also idk if I can stop now. The rain turned it a pink color with white streaks
