Rear Hub Bearings 1996 Discovery

Default Rear Hub Bearings 1996 Discovery

I'm going to do the rear hub bearings when I do the rotors sometime this week.

I guess I'll order these:

Timken 37 Timken 37
from Amazon, but I'm confused on how many I need to order.

For the rear do I need to order 4 sets of these, or just two of these?

In other words will clicking Quantity 1 on this get me enough to do one wheel completely? Or do I need to order Quantity 4 to do both wheels?

Make sense?

you need a quantity of 4 (two for each wheel) as it applies to this item on the Amazon platform. I however would spend a touch more and go for the SKF bearings...

I'm not trying to contradict you, but I am curious why you suggest that? It was my understanding that timkin is OEM for these bearings.

Truthfully, just my positive experience with SKF and recollection of "the great bearing debates" on this and other boards.

Is there a practical difference? Probably not, just my personal bias.

I'm with Jafir on this one. Timken was always the bearing of choice. They became hard to find while they were going through ownership changes a number of years ago. If they are back on the market, readily available and made in the US, I wouldn't ever look down my nose at a Timken bearing.

Don't forget wheel seals, get the double lip ones for defender

Got the bearings in, new seals, new rotors, new brake pads, and was in the middle of putting on new longer SS brake lines when:

NTC7291

The 4-way junction that the hard and soft lines go into on the rear axle broke. Couldn't get one of the soft lines out so removed that whole thing, put it in a vice and was trying to remove the soft line (cut it off and was using a socket). It stripped the whole thing out. Not worth re-tapping so ordered a part - which will take 5 days and $20 shipping to get to Montana.

Break from wrenching I guess.
