right. i was following that. maybe dumb question but does this anything to do with the slipped/pin liners problem/solution?

I think he is asking if you have pinned liners? Or maybe a failing liner? if it's happening at start up then likely not. If it's happening when it's warm - maybe. But on a 3.9 my "ticking noise" bet is cam and lifters.

Using a stethoscope I hear it loudest by the lifters. Pretty sure my piston liners are fine.

Feels rough. Almost like a misfire but I am not getting any misfire codes.

Any advice on loosening the crank, cam bolts without the special tool?

there's a hunter s thompson-ish write up in the D2 section about how the guy pinned his liners and stopped his ticking. a few guys say that's common for the D2.

No diff for the 4.0 tho right. same bet?
