I saw it online and called the owner. It was local and not a long drive. To tell the truth i always wanted a D2 but it look good and figured for the price it would be fine. It was on the side of the road and if the test drive was good then i would buy it. I really didn't look at it too close and have been shopping for weeks. I was tired and ready to buy. A car fax would have been my saving grace. I figure the miles are at least 230,000.

There is white stuff coming out of the overflow, the heater core is bypassed and motor oil on top of the engine right in front of the water pump. My local mechanic just shakes his head. I will get it tested Monday by a shop that works on rovers. I am a grown man but i am going to cry. I don't have it like that but for the price i paid i could live with putting $600 in her if would fix it. Land Rover : Discovery SE7 Sport Utility 4-Door in Land Rover | eBay Motors

[QUOTE=Savannah Buzz;362669]If by "overheating" you mean anywhere above 50% you are right. The gauges are not real accurate. If you hear a sound like water bubbles in pipes under the dash it could be exhaust gas from a head gasket leak. A $50 test from autoparts store "sniffs" the coolant and changes color.

It runs at 30% but after 20 - 30 min. of driving it starts to go up fast It might stay at 80% but after that i stop before it goes into the red. On a cold day it runs all day in the city without running hot. If i drive on interstate it runs hot when i get off on slower roads. Where i live it can get up to 80 degrees on Christmas so ,,,yea it is running hot. I don't drive it because of the over heating but at this point i don't know if i can drive it to the rover shop. photo on ebay Land Rover : Discovery SE7 Sport Utility 4-Door in Land Rover | eBay Motors

The heat core bypassed.... runs cold .... would want to open up the thermostat housing - bet it is empty. The white stuff a'int mayonaise, it is oil, most likely from a blown head gasket. The parts are about $300, plus machine shop, plus 12 hours labor. Won't be $600. Many DIY guys on here have done it themselves, 2 weekends with a wrench.

I have run my D1 in the summer with no stat and it was like 140 - 150F. I tried a 160 stat. I settled on a 180F stat.

That truck looks to be in great shape, the tires alone are $800 new, looks to be little to no rust.
Def worth fixing, e-bay has a buyer protection plan, he lied, you should get your money back and return the truck if you wanted.
He will then sell to someone else and screw them over.
For the price you paid, I say its worth fixing.

I hope to fix I guess i better get my hands dirty. Should i take it to the mechanic first to get it tested? or cut my loses?
I'm confused. The eBay listing says the mileage is estimated at 221,000. Where'd the 150,000 come from? Just the same, it doesn't look like you spent too much on it so it's worth fixing. A D1 in decent shape is pretty hard to find. Regarding the overheating, make sure that all of the cooling system components are in good shape before tearing the heads off. It sounds like head gaskets are a good possibilty, but a vehicle that old with that many miles probably has a partially plugged radiator by now.

The mayo in the oil is one thing. Have mechanic or yourself do an exhaust gas in coolant test (changes color). White smoke out the exhaust once truck warmed up is another, which you haven't mentioned.

JPSpen i paid $2000 for it and $300 in maintenance. Still over heats. It is being tow to the shop tomorrow for a quote. I am not going to worry about it. the money is gone. If it is too much to fix then....i just don't know.

231k.
That is amazing it went that far.
I am trying to nurse our 1997 at 167K.

You'll be OK if you change the head gaskets.

That is probably all it needs.
And a valve job.

I did my 1997 and you can too

1997 Land Rover replace catalytic converter and head gaskets

Best of luck to you.
Don't give up.
