Default Second Catalytic Converter to burn out.

Has anyone else had trouble with thier drivers side catalytic converter? This is the second time this year that this converter came apart. Already used my spare y-pipe. Sounds like everything has come apart inside. I have this horrible rattle and ping. She is blowing black smoke. I thought one of my bearings had spun or perhaps I bent a valve. Got underneath it with my stethiscope and isolated the noise to this cat. Does anyone have a modification to remove this y-pipe and install a different design with cheaper cats? Pretty sure I'm going to get rid of the resonator as well. Any plans for an inexpensive working exhaust system would be greatly appreciated.

Just have a shop weld in a universal cat. I'm assuming your spare one was used, and it was just bad too. Is this the cylindrical shaped cat that is failing? I cannot remember which is on which side. If so, that's the one that failed on my 96.

Or... do you weld? Maybe you can just weld in the "good" cat from the spare y pipe.

There are places online that will buy your old cats though.... the "exotic" imports prices are the highest... I know they talk about some of the BMW cats getting $300 for scrap, but I'm not sure if land rover counts as an exotic import. I've got a honda cat that is probably worth $100 they say. I'm going to check with the local recycle places first.

Yes it is the round shaped one. I suppose the used one could have went bad too. But why would the drivers side be going bad faster than the other side? I noticed when I removed my last y-pipe that the after CAT 02 sensor was completly missing the shield, like it had melted away or heated to the point where it broke off. Perhaps this side experiences more heat. I just came in from measuring up the exhaust system. Definitly going to cut out those CATS and weld in two new ones. Any reason why I should keep the resonator? I can cut it out and put in a 20 inch tailpipe. The resonator is shot too.

The round one seems to hang down a bit lower (at least it did on mine) and the shape doesn't seem the help keep the guts in place if they start to break up.
