Default Shop-time Estimate

I might let my local Landy professor handle a job and wanted to see what you think might be a ballpark guesstimate on shop-time:

1) Drop oil pan - inspect / clean pickup tube / replace gasket
2) Replace oil pump / timing chain and gears / water pump

Thanks

I'll hazard a guess: 1. 2-3 hours. 2. Substantially more, say 6 - 10 hours. Somewhat dependent on how dirty it is. Only replacing the water pump will be a lot less. Changing the timing chain and gears won't gain much if the cam and lifters are worm out.

The front bolts of the pan are connected to the front cover, so it's good to plan your sequence.

Have you replaced your cam/lifters/rocker arms yet? Crank and rod bearings? The bearings can be changed with the pan off (will need to renew seals for the crank caps side bolts, and crucifix). To change the cam, the front cover will need to come off and the lifters removed. To change lifters and rocker arms, the valve covers and intake manifold need to come off. Have you heard about "scope growth"? Maybe depends on why you need to get the work done, what your budget is, and what work has been done previously. I hope this is helpful. Something to think about anyway...

I would drain oil and drop the pan myself and take a look before I’d send it off to some other dude.

Thanks folks

just replaced manifold and valve cover gaskets along with new lifters - cam rocker arms push rods were in excellent condition

hoping not to need crank bearings but inspection will tell

timing chain is a 100K mile replace and I am nearly there and of course water pump at same time

the labor times manual for the Defender is in the google drive. It is a good guide for these trucks since they are very similar, but not exactly the same.
