Engine ECU in your 97 DI will be between the washer tank and the body, near the back of the engine bay on the passenger side. You should have a black plastic cover over it, held on by two black plastic "studs" (not sure what the real name is) that just pop out of the body. The one opposite the washer tank can be a bit difficult to pop. Connectors are on top of the ECU, just under the plasting, sticking up; you should be able to see them pretty clearly and see if any are corroded. There is a ground point just in front of that ECU (towards the front of the car) and down a little, kind of below a large-ish black relay that is also mounted on the engine bay wall - it think it's the ground point for the engine ECU, and it would be worth checking too. I know O'Reilly and Autozone around here let you check out OBDII scanners, definitely better than a tow to have codes read.

I personally know of three people (including myself) that had these exact same symptoms. My problem especially was the truck cranked and idled fine and the minute, no second you touched the gas it stopped. If it didnt quit you feathered your rear off just to keep it running......The problem for me and the other three. The throttle position sensor. Cheap to pickup at a bone yard and if it solves your issue source a new one and be done with it. I changed alot of crap before I got this tip from an old LR tech said he's seen this problem hundreds of times.

Default Pulled Codes

Well I finally got to the auto store to borrow their scanner and check my disco. So here are the codes that it pulled, I have not done any research yet about them. I will soon though

p1316 - misfire causing excessive emissions
p1187 - HO2s heater short circuit, upstream sensor
p1191 - HO2s heater short circuit, downstream sensor
p0300 - random misfire detected
p0305 - Cylinder 5 misfire
p0303 - Cylinder 3 misfire
p0301 - Cylinder 1 misfire
p1194 - HO2s heater circuit high resistance, downstream sensor
p1313 - misfire likely damage to catalyst Bank A

Well guys give it to me straight! THanks for any help.

is the truck still not running?
If it still does not run:
1. is ther spark at any and all cylinders?
2. is there fule in the rail and if so what do have for pressure?

I think the first thing I would do is clear all the codes and start over. If its running see what codes come back. My hunch still is the TPS if you have issues stalling with load.
