For the original socket head screws its either a 7mm or 8mm allen wrench.
What engine/tranny did the PO install? I would be concerned that somthing isnt correct given the socket sizes you used.

After having one for 5 or 6 years I wouldn't even consider an OE starter.

The top bolt and bottom bolt are the same, exactly. The bolt diameter is 3/8", coarse(16) thread. A 9/16" socket/wrench is what would be used for a hex head bolt. A 14mm would work in a pinch.

Certainly a better quality starter. But since there is no store around to get this, before the start of the holidays I'll have to live with what is immediately available

I don't know, it really doesn't matter as they fit and work very well. I am certain when the engine and tranny was replaced they were changed out.
