Default Steering box Rebuild.....uggg....worm gear adjustment lock nut

I am trying to remove the worm gear adjustment lock nut. I do not have that specific tool, LRT-57-007, wrench. I tried using my large pliers and a punch/hammer.

Does anyone have any other tricks?!?!?!?:confus ed:

Looks a lot like a plumbing basin wrench. Wish they had drilled two holes in the face of that so you could insert something and twist with a lever.

Land Rover Tools

Has that tool for $19...and they are in California too.

Since that "nut" is 2 3/4", going to try a hub nut socket to see it will work...if not, going to buy that tool....

Why exactly are you wanting to remove it?
Do you have a fluid leak, does the nut not stay tight?
Be specific.

To pull the worm gear to properly seat the seals in place and reinstall.

Need to rebuild it, due to leaks. The nut is frozen and will not come off.

What kit do you have?

I will be using the AllMakes brand from British Pacific, which has that seal. i am replacing due to the fact that is weeping a bit.

Do you know how expensive the rearing/seal kit is, big bucks.
Is the seal leaking or can you not keep the nut tightened?

Mike.

I am trying to change out the input shaft seal. By following the instructions, I need to remove the entire worm gear, to properly remove the bottom seal at the input side. I would try to pull it out using a pick, but I dont want to risk scoring anything.

And no, locking side is not leaking. Just having a hard time removing the locking nut.
