Default Steering pump or steering box?

Guys

Sometimes my steering is smooth and sometimes it is very hard... The level of the liquid in the reservoir is good and there seem to be no major leaks. The hoses that connect the reservoir are wet, but that happens with all discos all time. My disco is not a daily driver, but I have not added more liquid in 4 or 5 months.

The steering box was repacked two years ago and at least it does not show leaks. Have also purchased a chevy s10 replacement pump, but before changing it, I would liket to be sure that the one in my disco needs to be changed.

How can I be sure that the steering box is working fine and the pump is the one that needs to be replaced?

I would try flushing your system first and go from there. I had a problem when the fluid got warm i would loose all power assist so I flushed the sysytem. It still never fixed the problem completely but it helped a lot and you want to flush it before you put a new pump on anyhow.

I have a similar problem on my 95. The previous owner replaced the pump, but the steering is still not powered. At first start up or when cold, the wheels turn easily for a few minutes then all power is lost. I flushed and added the lucas, but no progress. What fails inside the boxes?
