Tail Lamp Meltdown

Tail Lamp Meltdown
Noticed one brake light way dimmer than the other, almost like it wasn't working. Found melted lamp base. Mine had also damaged the tail lamp housing, so new lamp base can turn too far when latching and contact is lost. Duct tape to the rescue, until a new housing can be obtained from (a) boneyard, (b) Paul Grant, (c) Santa Claus who will pick one up from the elves at the Rovers North outpost.
I noticed that the new in the plastic bag oem Rover lamp base had oxidation on all the contacts, I cleaned that up so they would be shiny. I suppose that these were made about same time as vehicle and have been on a shelf ever since. Probably removing bulb holders, a little crocus cloth, and shine up the connectors in both bulb holder and tail lamp housing, with a little dielectric grease for good measure would be in order. The grease fills up the air pockets between the contacts, so the metal parts still touch, but adjacent areas don't oxidize. If you looked at the contact area with a microscope, it would be like two pieces of sand paper touching, the high points make the contact and there are lots of small gaps.

Perhaps, if you can get the brightness. The D1 housing is sorta flat, vehicles with curved housings don't do so well as LED light tends to be in a narrow beam. And yep, my housing had "self vented". Might be a place to drill a vent hole, or be sure to use factory bulbs vs something a little different (brighter means more watts, and more heat).
