Default Thanks for the money!

That is certainly how I feel having stumbled upon this site when my 1997 Discovery I seemed to be sliding into old age. Since I first found this forum I have…
• installed a new headliner (sagging)
• replaced the ignition steering wheel lock (jammed)
• changed the thermostat (stuck open)
• Fixed a short in the headlamp pigtail (headlight not illuminating)
• Pulled the ‘Service Engine Light’ emissions reminder relay
• Installed a new cabin air filter (mine was totally gone)
• Replaced the radiator plug with a ½” brass plug w/ Teflon tape
• Installed new Kingsborne plug wires
• Started using Shell Rotella motor oil

All these things items have rejuvenated my 14 year old car. It has never run better. Next up are transfer case and differential fluid changes, greasing drive shaft, spark plugs (NGK 7131), and iPod hookup.

Thanks to all of you for your expertise, advice, and guidance. You’ve saved my car and my money. I'm handy/mechanical enough to do it all, but without instructions, I'd be lost.

I wish I could add more than I take from this forum, but for now, all I can do is contribute my gratitude.

A detailed follow up post like this is one of the best contributions that you can make. Many owners "discover" that they have hidden mechanical skills, they always felt a strong attraction to the tool aisle, and now after reading your post they can work up the courage to turn something besides the ignition key. Thanks.

You do have a copy of the RAVE tech manuals downloaded?

Yes I do.

I'm not inclined to do 'big' jobs that may render the car inoperable for a period of time since I live in NYC, don't have a garage, and it is the only car I own.

That said, the knowledge found here makes me a better consumer of mechanics time. I will know what the job takes and be ready to discuss options with the good local independent shop I've found (through a contact from this board). So even if I can't/don't want to do the job, I can save money by being informed.

As a result of the cabin filter (that strip under the windshield, my AC/heater fan was full of leaves, three bolts and it drops right out to clean out. I also had a lot of leaves and such between the radiator and the condenser, not sure how they got in, but once there they cut the air flow through the radiator.

Living in NYC must keep you in great physical shape, being that you have to take the engine block inside every night.....
