Default Thanksgiving nightmare: hailp

So it was supposed to be a quiet holiday with my mom, niece, and some hunting time for my brother.
NYC to the Catskills - a 90 minute drive to an airbnb in Jeffersonville.
My Rover had been running smoothly, heat and cooling all fine. I was getting an emissions monitoring code, and felt like my cats and exhaust were due,
but didn't think they were anywhere near urgent.
Got into some pretty long 40 degree inclines - running good at 65-70mph - then suddenly started shifting down and losing power.
No engine sputtering, but just couldn't keep going. Pulled over and noticed smoke coming out of the rear left wheelwell, in front of rear axle.
Smoke went away, and had the engine idling for heat ok, til the tow truck came. Next morning, just barely managed to drive the two miles to the village shop.
Check engine light finally came on. Same deal, losing power and shifting downwards.
Managed a car rental to take my folks home, but will have to leave her here, and hope for the best. A shop with some foreign car experience may take over come Monday.
Any ideas anyone? Gearbox failure? Is it possible my cats and exhaust failed, and so the engine can't breathe?
thanks in advance, and happy thanksgiving all.

Those steep uphills are taxing on D1’s that aren’t up to snuff. Fuel filter, air filter all new? Fluids all new, oil, gearbox, trans and diff?

Others will chime in....

Happy Thanksgiving!

thanks Stillruns - and a Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
oof tough year - out of work, now my baby down, miles from home, takeout turkey (!! yuck) and already lots more exposure to potential covid than planned.
Fuel filter, fluids, water pump - all changed in the last two years with less than 2k miles driven.
I did have my gas pedal all the way down, it seems, on previous uphill drives, but this was the first sustained 2 - 4miles uphill ever.

Hoping my cats imploded and blocked the exhaust - might explain the smoke? Am overdue for replacement anyways. cheers

Sounds like something similar to me a few years back. Check your plugs.

thanks. What are the implications of burnt trans fluid?
Will have the plugs checked, but she seems to fire up no problem.
Also what could the smoke be? seems to have come from the muffler area.....

If trans fluid is burned, looks like coffee, smells burned, clutches will slip in the transmission and could overheat the transmission
