Default Thinking about getting a D1, any advice?

Hi there, I've been looking into getting a Land Rover for the past month now, and I've decided that the Discovery 1 would probably be best for me. I did go take a look at a '96 and test drove it and whatnot, but I didn't make the deal (he wants $1100) because honestly I don't know much about them. I asked the seller some questions, but I figured any advice from someone who knows about them and isn't trying to get me to buy something would be much better. I'm used to old Volkswagens and fixing them myself, and that would be one of my main questions--would I be able to work on and maintain this vehicle without the need of taking it to a repair shop? Because that's one expense I'd like to avoid. Also, what are the costs of owning this vehicle going to be like? I'm a college commuter, and I'm only putting 10-15 miles per day, so MPG isn't a big issue. I love cars and I would do everything and anything to maintain it, so would this be a good vehicle for me to get, or would it be too much for me to get into at this point? Any advice you guys have would be a great help and very appreciated.

Check your owners manual(if you got it with the car)there is usually a section where the radio code is written down.

Radio code can also be supplied by the dealer. Be prepared to have the radio out of the car so you can give them the serial number on the back. Thye might ask you to go in person with proof of ownership.

It should be a 5 digit code, if they give you a 4 digit, take it but ask for them to check for a 5 digit code. I have been given 4 digit codes for 2 different radios, only to find out it needed a 5 digit code.

With the RAVE service manual and the help of this forum you can do it. Try to buy the lowest mileage example possible. Stay away from people that have owned the car less then 2-3 years. I see a bunch for sale after a few months ownership with the owner not knowing anything about the cars history or how to repair it. Service records, preferably from a LR mechanic are a bonus. If you are sure you want to buy one, get an Ultra Guage and buy a 96'or newer, plug into the OBD II port and drive the car for 20 minutes, then let idle for at least another 30. Make sure it doesn't overheat. If you can do a block test(rent the kit at Autozone) to look for HG leaks or cylinder liner leaks you should. I have 2-96s as daily drivers and love them, but be prepared to work on it.
