Throttle Body Cleaning - Carb Cleaner Not Enough

Default Throttle Body Cleaning - Carb Cleaner Not Enough

Inspired by Danny Lee 97 Disco, I decided maybe I was not doing a complete job of cleaning my throttle body. As anyone with an older truck with multiple owners knows, you are alwasy finding something a PO "forgot" to do.

I had sprayed carb cleaner in my PCV vent intake on the throttle body, and in the EVAP port as well. This time I decided to spray again and probe these spaces. What came out of the PCV port (into the main bore in front of the butterfly valve looked like grit similar to coffee grounds. While my spray would come thru, it must have been like a gunk cave inside, and after the spray solvented the goo, it just would melt back together. Used Q-tips and cotton rag and metal rods to swab it out. Of course, this would be a good place for one of those basic gun cleaning brush kits.

And found PCV hose is starting to crack, vac leak in the making...

Cleaned out evap port as well.

Cleaned throttle butterfly valve front and back with rags and brush (delicate). There is a depression in the "floor" of the throttle body just behind the butterfly valve, and some of the solvent will collect there, good to wipe that out as well.

Idles good, smooth running. Thanks, Danny.

Glad I could share something helpful with you my good friend. From a Rambling Wreck once removed to another Alumni Brother. Good ole country boy Engineuity.

I took four or five q-tips at a time then an old cotton t shirt wrapped around a 1/4 inch drive extension worked well probing the port where the VC hose enters. The port in SB's picture marked Purge Valve was the one Spike asked about.

Mine was quite black and gooey also. That is why I chose to leave that line off and cap that port. The difference is like comparing a small old timey six banger to a 302 4 barrel. 40mph out of first gear no sweat.

Anyone know what rpm's the 4.0 should be considered yellow line red line? These tachs are white all the way. I never knew these had a real power band. The difference is simply amazing.

I wonder what would be the effect of changing those lines from the valve covers to vent thru one of those little air filters and not enter the engine or would that be a bad move? I am thinking just leave well enough alone for now.

Does anyone with multiple Discoveries have one they would volunteer as a "Test Bed"?

I still have my intake off, I am bringing it inside today and trying my gun cleaning brush on it
