Time for a new engine
Well that time has come when I have to pull out the old engine and find a new one.
I was driving home from work and next thing you know HUGE cloud of smoke surrounded the truck and she stopped running. I pulled it over and took a look at all the parts laying in the road. Got a tow to the house and pulled out the engine. Had to find out what went wrong as i just rebuilt it. I started with the front cover and found the cause of the explosion. Turns out the thrust plate cracked and the cam walked until it came in contact with the front cover and it came to a stop. As a result of that the timing chain broke and the bottom end went to crap, in the form of piston #1 letting go and punching holes in the block and oil pan.
So now I'm on the hunt for a new motor. Do I have any other options than a GEMS 4.0?

Ouch. That's bad.
You could put in a GEMS 4.6 from a 1995-1998 RR P38. Makes more torque and HP and is pretty much just plug and play. Might need to reprogram the ECU but it's the easiest engine to swap in because it's the same block, heads, mounts etc. Everything is pretty much the same except for the extra displacement.
This is the route I plan on going if my 4.0 takes a dump.
If you just want to put in another 4.0, then this looks like a good option for a rebuild: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Land-Rover-D...JZR-Dl&vxp=mtr

Sorry for your loss! That's some pretty spectacular damage for a low rev explosion.....
Normal route instead of finding a 4.6 is to grab a 4.0 and swap in a 4.6 crank and rods, it's easier to find a 4.0 than a 4.6 and it's cheaper. The GEMS ECU does not need an update, both configurations run the same tune.
I'd personally go with an bone yard LS Gen III/IV. If your gonna spend the dime why not?
