see https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...-filter-34270/ from the tech area where other writeups await you.

It looks bad on the diagram becasue it is PITA, cross member has to come out and go back in; easier on a lift, more of a challenge on ramps.

Also see attached page fom the automatic gearbox section, which has more details than the maintenance section of the RAVE worshop manual.

very helpful!
Thank you Savannah Buzz for the link to Long Haul's pics of filter change, that has wiped away worries of doing it myself. Only prob is I have no access to lift and do not own ramps. Should I jack it or buy ramps?

How many miles on your truck, when was the filter last changed and is your fluid now red or brownish?

Only 148k
Just had two other members in another thread confirm I have an inverted sprag clutch and a rebuild is the only solution. One member said rebuild ASAP the other said it will do no harm to continue driving it that way other than the fact that I have to manually shift to first each time I stop.

Sorry Disco Mike I forgot it was another thread were I was talking about my tranny prob and was hoping a fluid and filter change was going to fix it.

If you have to drop to 1st everytime you stop then the trans is toast, drive it until it moves no more, in the mean time either source a good used one or save to have yours rebuilt.
No hurry, it could do this forever, changing the fluid will help it last longer.
You will know it is time to R&R when it no longer shifts on its own at all.

Nothing like a man's fanatical devotion to a machine to put the kibosh on a relationship.

Look at it this way, if you buy a "runner" for $3000, drive it 2.5 years before it croaks, you have spent $100 a month on a great toy. With "reduction to the rediculous" you can convince SWMBO what a great deal it is.

I got a steal!
I feel guilty when I tell people i paid $1150 for this 97 Disco with only 148k. What drew me in was previous owner said fuel pump quit working and that was my victory dance on my 98. I knew all I had to do was rebuild with new motor,"Airtek E3270" but of coarse we all know the tranny situation, still a great steal in my opinion!
