Default Trouble with fuel system in a '97

Hey folks,

Recently got rid of an '03 SE7 so I could get back into a 97 SE7 that has been sitting idle in the midwestern elements for more than a year now.
The gentleman who I sold the 03 to installed a new fuel pump in the 97 as part of our deal for the newer car.
I thought that was going to fix the problem but we're not there yet.
Any help I can get here would be much appreciated.
Here's what he has seen/done to the thing so far:

Have a problem with a 1997 disco advanced evap 125k miles
it quit running about a year and a half ago. no gas pump noise in back.
replaced pump with an airtex 3270,turn key pump works but….
tried to start had to cycle the key a few times and vent the schrader valve fired up but only idled when accelerating would cut out.
tried with MAS disconnected figuring it was bad no difference thought Mass airflow sensor bad
had put a K&N in not too long before it quit, got new one no difference.
can kind of pump it to get higher rpms did get it to run at 2500-3000 smooth but put in drive no power and little backfires noted
pressure at pump gone after key off ok with key on pos 2 but not going out to the fender
took output line off hooked up a gasoline to a gas can and flowed well like a water hose.
figured filter bad. wrestled it out was some restriction but not plugged replaced it and still no difference
did hear a trickle of fuel? returning to tank when pump running ,fuel pressure regulator?(vacuum line checked and tight to press reg.)
I Am at wits end any ideas ?

----Thanks in advance for any guidance

See if you can borrow a fuel pressure test gauge or use a tire gauge for a quick test before you dispose of the tire gauge. Expect 32-34 PSI at position 2 with pump running. Test valve is on passenger fuel rail. Voltage to pump may be an issue (bad connections). Unplug vehicle speed switch from transfer case - if it goes bad when running it will think you are going over 114 mph and cut off engine. VSS if bad may cause speed reading on OBDII scanner to be way out of range.

Love the fact that everyone is NOW calling that test port/thingy/male private part on the fuel rail a Shrader Valve! Love you guys, keep up the good work.

Josh, hook up a code reader and see what you pull outta the ECM. That will help get you started on where to look and help us tell you where to look.......know what I mean.

Thanks Buzz and Scouts for the quick replies.
Going to work on getting a pressure gauge or a couple of cheap tire gauges I can use to test it a couple of times for the purpose of getting this thing back on its feet.
CEL is not on and a decent code reader found no codes being thrown.
I thought that was pretty odd.

It is pretty odd, I agree, no pending? Since it sat how's the fuels condition? The K&N won't harm the MAF unless it's soaked with oil. I blow the excess through with my compressor to the point where it's tacky but will not mist the oil. I've had mine installed for over five years. What type of maintenance did the truck get before it was parked? Wits end when you own a Rover had better last longer otherwise your not learning anything. Do this for me, remove every sensor connector (TPS, MAF, IACV, both Coolant, CkPS, CPS, KS's and so on, give it a shot of LPS or some type of contact cleaner, reinstall it. The FPR is not the issue, ignore that. It only comes into the picture when the motor is running. If you don't have a copy of the Rave you need to. Crappy fuel sitting in the rail for over a year aint a good thing, might need to blow some carb cleaner through those......I'm just thinking what I'd be trying to get it to fire up and stay fired.
