the radiator from our 67 is out getting redone right now...
those cars run hot anyway, so much stuff in a fairly cramped engine bay...

I don't want Mr. George's stat to be fully open. That would be at 195 - 200 F. His cooling system should be able to support low - mid 180's this time of year, I am 100 miles or so south of him and mine is not at that point, and have twice the age on the engine. It starts to open at 180. Full open 15-20F above that, for stats made for US market. I've tossed some in a pot and posted the pix. See https://landroverforums.com/forum/ge...highlight=Soup

Used the old stove test and a candy thermometer. Did the FROG, you know cold to slow boil. One BACK in the car STARTS to open at 179, wide open at 194.
The OLD new one rated at 195 Starts to open at 198 full at 206.
So the 180 is back in the car. Glad we are recovering the antifreeze or this could have been EXPENSIVE.

Now I will add to the soup...according to my UG when starting first thing in the morning, driving at no more than 30mph the 1.5 miles to the expressway and then getting upto speed (60mph) my engine temp climbs to 212-215 and then drops down to 195.6 and stays right there, it jumps between 195 and 199, I take that to be the UG being slow to respond to the inputs from the ECU as it never stays at 199 for more than a few seconds.
If I start off when cold and stay in the city the temp never goes past 195.
In the winter time letting the engine warm up for 10-15min the engine temp never raises past 150-160, then once on the expressway the temp spikes in the 212-215 range, and then drops to 180 or so, back up to 200 or so, then back down to 190 or so, and so on until all of the coolant is warm and then it stays a steady temp from then on.
Engine speed makes no difference in the temp spike only on how fast it reaches the spike.

Spike is right, you are monitoring a metal spring and ball of wax with electronic digital instruments. There will be thermal overshoot as the mechanical stat heats up the first few cycles and reaches its normal range. Just can't see it with the "slow" analog gauge. Not a concern, you just don't want it to keep on going to way past 215.
As far as the UG updating, that will be as the ECU changes the readings. Remeber, the UG is just a display for temp, like your computer monitor displays what it is sent. The ECU is running a conversion calculation all the time on the temp, mine seems to update in like 2 or 3 degree increments. Like any computer, the ECU has to put priority on some things, like fuel injection, so there may be brief periods where it doesn't update the temp display as fast.

I don't remember how long mine took, sorry, It was pretty quick though or my ADD would have been freaking out. You'll get it, and when you do, report back with some engine temp info! ha ha
