There you go a whole deisel disco, that should have all the parts to convert yours, and have parts to spare, and save the headache collecting all the parts you need.

The original idea was to restore the Disco. Not a stock restore but completely redo the interior and repair any rust issues. Drop the "new" engine and transmission in and roll with it.

Wow, that is definitely a major thought. Thanks guys! Now.. what was this about a defender for about $6k?

I'm seriously thinking into this, I'd love a Defender right now but the Disco is already here and plus it's has a crap ton of memories in it from just the past two years. I just can't see it being gone and just having another disco because Claire isn't "just a disco".

Personally, I'd just import a diesel Disco and make new memories.

Looking at all the Ex-MOD defenders I notice they mainly have the 2.5 NA Diesel engine. I realize this was the only engine of choice at the time but what are some different engine options for later down the road? 70hp is not very significant though most sources I've read say they get about 25mpg on average These are REALLY cool to look at and to shop around but I'm looking for the 300TDI, TD5, or maybe a 2.5 Turbo Diesel.

if i were doing the project you were i would look at not only horsepower but what is your ultimate goal for this engine? are you going to putz around town in this thing? do you plan on driving to Chile in a few years? The TD5 is a great engine but has as many electrics as my D2. The 300Tdi is also a great engine but has a few more electrics than the 200Tdi. The 200Tdi has 2 wires. Just saying do all your research about each engine. Look at the UK forums and check out the diesel sections to see what common problems people are having with each. 6 hours of research now will save you 6 days of problems later.

i'd say when you have the opportunity to get a nice defender you do.

They had a 2.5L turbo in those years too, but the military wisely chose to get a more simple version. Turns out they were right, the stories on the internet are that the 2.5 turbo had a weak block in it's earliest versions.
