Glad the info was helpful. If I can pick up the 01 Disco I may very well do the project. The shipping and customs would be the biggest challenge and in my opinion I would probably need to go to England in order to buy the engine and related parts an then crate them. I have family over there so it is not that difficult.

The good thing about putting a 2.5 in a Disco is that you have loads of room to work on the motor. If I do take on the project I will post a thread.

Found a new website that is pretty legitimate from what I have been reading. Look up M&D Engineering and he has the "new" 300TDI engines. They are 2.8L and created by the same people who designed the 300tdi. They put them in ford rangers over seas.

From MD Engineering
The HS 2.8L engine was developed from the 2.5 ‘300’ Tdi and has the same backend and engine mounting points on the cylinder block. The 2.8 will fit in to any application that already has the ‘300’ Tdi installed. The position of the air inlet to the inlet manifold and turbocharger and the turbo exhaust outlet are different.

1. The improved head gasket is now steel laminate.
2. The crankshaft is forged not cast.
3. The cylinder bock has been re-designed to improve cooling .
4. The combustion system has been re-developed by AVL.
5. The improved connecting rod has the cap secured by bolts with thread in rod.
6. A new piston has been developed.
7. The rear crankshaft seal clamping has been improved to stop oil leakage.
8. The rpm at maximum torque has been reduced 1400TGV&1600WG(1800Tdi)
9. The power and torque have been increased.

Displacement - 2.785 Liters
Max Power - 135 PS @ 3800 RPMS
Max gov. rpm - 4000
Max torque - 277 LB/FT @ 1400 RPMS
Injection - Bosche VP14 (Non Electronic)
Aspiration - Variable Geometry Turbo, Inter Cooled
Emissions - Euro II

This seems to have morphed from putting a 200/300 tdi in a 95 d1 to putting a 300tdi/td5 into a d2. Putting 200/300 tdi into a disco is pretty straightforward. Putting a td5 into a D2 is pretty straightforward. Putting a 300 tdi into a d2 maybe possible (anything is with enough time, money and stupidity) but it is utterly impractical. The catch with a D2 is the electronics. The BCU has to get input from the engine and gearbox. If it doesn’t, the vehicle won’t run. Removing the BCU is not practical because the brakes, locks, lights, suspension, etc all depend on the BCU. A 300 tdi can’t “talk” to the BCU.

If you are in the States this is all a moot point. It is against EPA regulations to install a non conforming engine into a any street vehicle. The 200/300 TDi are non conforming. In the past it was really hard to determine what engines were in which cars and they really couldn’t enforce this. However with OBDII this has all changed. When you connect OBDII it tells you the VIN of the vehicle and which engine is supposed to be in there. In most states you will not pass inspection if it says there should be a V8 gasoline engine and you have a diesel. The State DMV computer will spit it out and fail you. Furthermore, to put a diesel in you need the diesel BCU from the donor vehicle. That will have the VIN info from the donor car. So when you go for an inspection, the VIN on the windshield will not be the same as the VIN scan. If your state does not require inspections you will be ok but if they do chances are they do an OBDII scan and your stuffed.

There are work arounds like flashing the V8 BCU to accept the TD5 but this depends on the BCU, the td5 ECU and seems to be a bit of a crapshoot. I don’t think anybody has got a Land Rover diesel to pass an OBDII test. If anybody has I’d love to hear how they did it. Otherwise stick to a pre 96 vehicle.

The 2.8 Powerstroke is a great engine. Basically it is a bored out 300 TDi with a variable vane turbo. It is made in Brazil for Ford (who own the rights to the 300 TDi) M&D are a legit company. IMHO the extra cost of a HS 2.8 isn’t worth the cost over a 300 Tdi but since none of this makes any economic sense anyway, you might as well go all the way.

I have a 95, OBDI. We aren't held by the same emission laws right?

Pre OBDII vehicles are not exempt from US federal emissions laws. They apply to all vehicles newer than 21 years old. Different states have different ways of enforcing this. I’ll bet that if you call the DMV and explain what you want to do, they will tell you you can’t do it. How they enforce that is another issue. Depending on your state, you may not be able to get a 95 diesel to pass inspection and/or emissions. I’d say in California your chances would be slim to none and in Georgia they would probably be pretty good. Being pre OBDII doesn't make you exempt, it just makes you less likely to get caught into a bureaucratic nightmare.

Scary.. but in Mississippi the people who do the testing aren't to bright. Now when I move back to Texas I may encounter more problem but having family who can just give me sticker in hand comes into play
