Default Ventilation question

New poster here! I got a 96 Disco about a month ago and have been fussing through it, fixing up a few small things and learning all its quirks.
I have a question for something odd that I cant see mentioned in the Rave manual.

When I lower the drivers window even just a little bit (and this is a RHD UK built vehicle), a vent from the footwell opens, and hot air from the engine bay blows in. This happens regardless of the A/C being on or off, and also is unaffected by the 'air recirculation' switch or vent settings of the AC.

It seems to me that is supposed to be some kinda of a draft through airflow design, but ive never read about it mentioned anywhere.
Since I am in the Caribbean, I really have no intention of having hot engine air on my feet at any time, and so I am not able to cruise around with the window down, always window up and AC on (which is okay most of the time!).

Some time soon I may just crawl in to the footwell or engine bay and tape over any vents I can find that are involved in this, but I was hoping to find some proper diagram or circuit of what is taking place with that window and footvent relationship.

Thanks for any pointers

May want to bypass heater core if you have no need for warm air. Certain version D1's and all D2s have hot coolant at all times in the heater core, no on/off valve.

I don't kinow of any vents tied into the window system, sounds strange to me.

I had a 928 that had a hot water valve in the A/C system of all places, it would go bad and dump hot engine air into the A/C.

fresh air flap is being opened by change in air pressure inside vehicle - see attached from Rave . Note that many vehicles have fresh air intakes. Don't know if putting it on "recirculate" would defeat this, may have to have fan on speed 1.

That talks about 2 fresh air extraction vents in the rear, I know about those since my rear interior is out. He said something about a vent in the front floor I thought. Hot air from engine bay, the extraction vents are in the rear.

It is pulling in air from the intake below the windshield, and it is passing the heater core, which is full of hot water. He may have a stuck flap in the heater/ AC system. He is in warm always climate, so bypassing heater core would work, but will remove the headgasketbeleakin' bubble alert. There was also a post about older Rovers having a fresh air flap at the firewall, but I don't think that is on a Disco. But what do I know, I went to school at the Big Chicken...

We both did, at least you went to your classes though. I merely signed up and got the check from the VA.

Well I feel pretty silly now that i've found the cause. I went poking around and saw that a major wiring harness boot was loose, the one directly behind the diesel filter. With that back in place, the cabin is sealed and no more hot foot air. I can see that putting the window down allowed hot air to rush in, but the strange part is that it was only noticable with the drivers window, not the others.

Of course now today I have a new problem to deal with, alternator bearing sounds like its very much on the way out

See if you can locate an indy rebuilding shop for alternators and starters, unless you can find a junk yard, new ones are high priced and costly to ship. In the States, our auto parts chains offer rebuilt ones, but the mass rebuilders use bottom of the barrel parts and the failure rate is high. Just so we can dream, what kind of fuel mpg do you get on that diesel?
