Ventilation question
Well we do metric here and its so far seems to be around 500km till around the E mark, I didn't wait for it to get to the warning light, just in case the warning light isnt working! Ive only run through 2 tankfulls on this thing so far and its mostly been urban stop and start.
Its not the best diesel economy i've heard about, but the best part you can dream about is that our diesel is heavily government subsidised, and its less than 25UScents per litre, roughly $1 per gallon. Its a nice break from my Subaru Forester economy which used less subsidised premium fuel.
The alternator update is that I 'successfully' tore it down and replaced the rear bearing on tuesday, but on a drive home tonight again its giving trouble via the tach signal disappearing, and the charging light came on for most of the drive home, it disappeared eventually, but when I got home, shut down and did a few test startups, the charging light now doesn't come on when ignition is in position 2.
I will take the alternator out again tomorrow and double check my work, but definitely also need to find a new one, a local source has a 65A unit in stock but instinct tells me to hold out for the 100A version which is what is in there now.

Your regulator/brush pack has gone out inside the alternator. BP of Utah is one source for this, here is a pix from them. Unless your repair left the small wire that attaches by bolt loose. It makes alternator "produce". The amps produced come out the big wire, and the frequency produced comes out the fine wire attached not by bolt but wuth a "flying lead" plug in to signal the speed to the tach.

Well I would have been happy to try that, but today I took it out again and see that the 'ledge' in the casting that holds the outer edge of the rear bearing in place has completely broken away, which now has the brand new bearing wobbling around in place :/
SO
As much as I am learning about saving troublesome alternators, I am going to have to replace it with a new unit. So far i've had no luck. There is a shop in the next town that has the 65A unit, but I suppose i'd be better off waiting on the correct 100A. There is a Britpart agent that says he has Denso units being shipped in but ill have a 2 week wait.
I am in Trinidad, which has quite a lot of Land Rovers around. From very old series models to very many new Range Rovers. Defenders of all ages are common. The Discovery 1 seemed to be quite popular when first introduced here in the early 90's, mine was a one owner very original example. The gasoline V8 versions are rare compared to the diesels.

see Direct-fit Alternator Conversion - pics inside - Land Rover Forums : Land Rover and Range Rover Forum and
for some options. Member Tom Rowe runs a RR 120 amp alternator on his Disco 1, so that may also be an option.
