What can this noise be?
Hi guys,
My LR runs well, but intermittently starts making this deep-throat type noise, like a monster in a cavern. I think it's a little worse when I just start the engine and seems to quiet a bit as it gets warm. I can't tell if it's coming from the engine or somewhere else down there. You will hear some ticking at the start of the video, but then the deep noise takes over after about 10 secs and you can hear it clearly through the end.
Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

take off the belt see if it goes away, i think it is the fan clutch or water pump
grab a fan blade or 2 and see if it will move front/back
is your power steering full?, also sounds like your alt is noisy (different noise in the vid)
looks like time to tackle some oil leaks, like mine used to be lol, i found alot of the oil leaks fix cheap, new o rings on stuff

Tom, thanks. Today it barely made the noise, which was a bit puzzling.
Since I never removed the belt myself (still a novice working the Discovery, although fairly mechanically inclined) I need to check how to do it and try. It may be a good time to put a new belt in. I checked my service records and the current belt was put in at 117K miles, so it has 30K miles.
I did remove the fan shroud and tried moving the fan. The fan itself doesn't move but the water pump pulley has a little bit of play. Is that how it should be to "float" a bit with the belt moves, or is that a problem? The play is very small, barely rocks back and forth.
Power steering fluid is slightly below the low mark (or the lowest ridge on the little dipstick tube), so it still wets about 1/4 inch of the dipstick. (The manual seems to imply that the low mark is the end of the dipstick?).
Is the alternator noise a sign of a problem?
Regarding oil leaks yes, it has gotten better but I still have a ways to go. I recently replaced one transmission cooling line (which was leaking bad at the crimped connection), but I can't seem to get to the other 2 lines, too many twists and turns and up to the transmission, so I may need to take that to a mechanic.
Thanks again for your reply.

top off the ps fluid
there should not be play in the fan, pump, or pully you may have found the problem
30k on the belt should be ok
thought i heard some slight alt bearing noise, probly nothing
the belt is easy on off just use a rachet to move the tensioner and slip it off, the belt can fit 2 ways so be sure it is routed properly
you could also get a long extension, prybar, screwdriver touch to waterpump with engine running then put ear against it be careful don't slip and get the tool caught in the belt
hell that noise is so bad i would think you can pop off the belt and spin the waterpump by hand and hear it, also spin alt by hand see how it sounds

Thanks. I understand the PS fluid is the same than the ATF? So I can top off with the same Pennzoil ATF I just used after fixing the transmission cooler line?
And I assume I top off directly into the little reservoir where I check the dipstick?
I will further pursue the water pump / pulley issue. Probably next weekend, weather permitting.
Thanks for all the guidance!
