Thank you, thank you, thank you, I love how I get blasted all over for simply saying I was a Toyota man earlier this week. In my opinion the Land Rover is for someone that wants to have a money eating hobby. If used as a DD it literally will not only leave you broke but it will be a constant source of unreliable issues. With that said I have two. Why, because the word on the streets is they're P.O.S. so I can buy them all day long for 1k. I run them not into the ground but until I've had enough or the cost of repair is to great. Then I run an add to come get it for 1k. Thus I have no loss. I have had nothing but Toyota's and Samurai's in terms of 4x4's for the last 11 years.
1987 Suzuki Samurai (owned for 4 years and not one time did it ever strand me
(brakes)
1995 Toyota 4runner (owned it for 5 years and not one time did it leave me stranded
(needed less than 1k in shop payed maint. in 5 years)
1999 4runner 5", Locker and 267k miles with a tapping valve, not once did it leave me
(needed nothing but a timing belt in 3 years)
2001 Jetta bought new, left me 3 times stranded before 75k

Current d1, has left me stranded in the first 30 days of ownership
Has also needed
a vac line replaced to cure high rev
valve cover gasket
power steering pump

I have a 31 year old straight axle yota that will go through more than my Rover will locked. Don't believe me go to Uwharrie and see what those guys run 90% of the time. That Yota does not leak one damned drop of fluid. I park the Disco in the grass because it would ruin the driveway.

My point in all this Spencer is if I had the 4k to buy another nice locked 4runner I'd do it and never have to get in my truck thinking it may not start. I second guess this Rover every single time I get in it, but for 1500 bucks it is what it is. But you'll never find a locked good looking 4runner for 1500 bucks because no one is that stupid. My 31 year old truck is bringing 3k tomorrow am.

Yeah, they're not the most awe-inspiring looking vehicles ever made.

You guys are nuts, you can make a 4runner look damned good. I have never had a single person stop me to talk about a Rover but I have gotten the "damned idiot" looks. I put my 1st gen Yota on the road and I can't not have someone ask me to buy it at least once.

I just remember reading the Jeep forums back when I had my Wrangler, and all the posts were about fun stuff. People talking about going on trips, doing little mods here and there, what new wheels should I get, etc, etc,...
Around here, it's ALL ISSUES. Every once in a while someone will post pictures about some trip or something that they took, but it's usually followed by, "and here is the list of problems I came home with."
I'm a little disenchanted with the green oval at the moment, if you couldn't tell.

I wanted to say the same thing Upchuck but I need these guys for help and experience that I lack so I wanted to tread lightly. I just feel like these are Expo vehicles and part of the Expo is not having to worry about "whats going to break next". I have never owned a vehicle that I get behind the wheels wondering if it will let me down like a Rover. Maybe I just got a bad one. I don't know how many times I've heard a mechanic say "sell it, now" or " good luck with that in the swamp" and then there's "good luck with that at Uwharrie, it will make it but it will be banged up, leaking and hobbling home". None of these guys were being macho other brand aholes they were all former owners.

My rover has been pretty damn reliable aside from ELECTRONICS.

I had a 98 4runner.. It was lifted big tires yada yada. Not even 25% as sexy as my discovery. But it did have a bad headgasket at 200k. Skueeked like a **** and rear bearings on that yota are THE STUPIDEST DESIGN EVER.

I can't break this LR addiction. Mechanically I love it. Electronically it can go fk itsself

I am not downing the brand just challenging the notion that it is a good dd or even "the best 4x4 by far". What it is, is a very inexpensive true expo rig that will need consistent maintenance and give you a whole lot of goodies for the money (CDL) etc.

I felt I had every right to post this thread because of the multiple threads I posted about how much I loved it. I took it on a job to Illinois and put 7k on it all was well!
