Default Whats the best way to clean my muddy alternator?

Hello Good People,

I removed my working alternator out the car and want to clean off its layers of dry caked on mud.
Whats a good method for doing this?
What are the do's and don'ts?

Thanks

Isopropyl Alcohol and compressed air? I wouldn't think that would damage the windings or brushes.
