Default Wierd problem

Weirdest problem happened with my 95 disco yesterday I went into the grocery store and when I came out I went to start it and the key would not turn in the ignition. The steering wheel wasn’t locked initially but locked when I tried to move it side to side. I took off the top plastic steering column cover and inspected but couldn’t see anything wrong. Well after about an hour of playing around with it to no avail I called AAA, after the call I started reassembling the plastic steering column pieces, after I clicked it into place I said what the hell give it another shot and wouldn’t you know it started right up. Since then I have had about 5 start ups with no problem. I'm stumped what it could have been and have no idea what I did to fix it lol.

I had a similar issue ones, on my Jeep - there is a cable that allows you to get the key out of the switch only on "P" (parking)
In my case, that cable was under pressure and hold the key in the switch...

The other option is that your key/switch should be replaced.

The brass "pins" inside the cylinder wear down. Not uncommon at all. Search on this forum will yield good results.

So this is just a sign the ignition internals are going and not a one time fluke?

If it where a one time fluke then there wouldn't be a gazillion posts about the exact same issue.

Take the tumbler out of the cylinder and inspect it. It's old and abused no doubt. 18 years of you turning your guts would do the same.

By the way, nobody who drives a Land Rover needs a parking sign. Everyone knows where you park by the oil stains you leave until it eventually becomes an environmental issue and they toss a spill kit at your truck.
