Discovery Doing Wierd Things
My 1997 Disco has 98,000 miles on it. It has been running fine until yesterday. I filled it up with regular 87 Octane here at a Shell Station. After filling it up it seemed to run fine, I took on about 3/4's of a tank right to the top. I drove the truck home, which is about 10 minutes and it sat for about 4 hours. Later I started it up and drove on the highway about 5 miles at 65 mph. It ran fine, I had to stop and pick up something so I left it running for about 20 minutes. It ran fine. It then started to rain pretty heavily here so I stopped at dunkin donuts and shut off the truck, about two minutes later I came out and started it up, it ran real rough and stalled. I drove straight home, about 2 mins and sat in my driveway in park, it idled real high, (about 1250rpm). So i shut it down and took my other truck. About three hours later I came back and fired it up and immediately took it around the block a few times and it ran fine (i didnt let it heat up that time). This morning I fired it upand let it get warm, I drove it around for about 15 minutes and it was perfect, the truck heated up, ran well, was responsive, just like normal. Im a little worried now, because I dont know why it would have done that Never did it before and I drive about 100 miles to work everyday so I dont want to get stranded.......Any ideas?

Heck, my '05 Range Rover with 6,000 miles on it has done that. I've learned to get used to "one-offs" with Land Rovers. I used to have a '97 Disco that would "lag", usually going up hill under some strain, or at high speed, of course always late at night in the middle on nowhere. The engine would sort of shudder and decrease power although RPMs stayed put. It made me break into a cold sweat each time. What the dealer ended up doing was replacing some corroded battery cables. That was at about 90k miles. Fixed my engine weirdness. I don't think your experience is critical, but I usderstand the anxiety. Check the cables. Good luck.

Great post with all the details ! If only everyone could do that [&:]. Your issue is most likely related to a corroded fuel pump connection. In short, the high idle is caused by feedback to the computer from the corrosion. Pull up the carpet in the cargo area and remove the fuel pump access plate. Check the connector for corrosion. Also check the connector in the left rear wheel well for the same. New pump & harness will rectify.

The fuel pump was just done not even 200 miles ago just before i picked up the truck. I will still check it for corrosion, you never know with these things. I have driven it every day since then and now it runs fine, no problems at all so who knows?

Have you checked the fuel filter? My 97 Disco was running badly (sputtering and losing power on hills). I took it to a LR specialist and he found a clogged fuel filter was the culprit. It's an easy fix for most people but I was out of town with no tools of my own so I had to have a mechanic fix it for me.
Distributer Cap. It may be cracked. Mine was doing the same thing when it rains... It will idle real rough and then it will settle down. I would check if there is moisture in there if it happens again.
