I was hoping that someone may be able to help me.

We have a problem with the front windscreen wipers on our 1999 Discovery 1 - when you hit the stalk just to clear the screen sometimes it will just wipe across once and then sometimes you have to wait a few minutes for it to stop.

If you put it onto the first setting for intermittent wipe it will do the first few wipes as it should and then the number of wipes will increase until it going continuously - and then when you turn it back off again it will continue wiping for a few minutes.

Is this a common problem - is there something that we can check?

Your wiper switch is bad, remove it, rebuild it, put it back.
