Default wits end

Everyone knows I've been having fuel pump issues... I think.

Replaced the pump, only the pump, not the assembly.

now, I got it to start and run.

It runs for about 2-3 minutes, and runs strong, then I can hear it start to miss then she dies out.

Crank it for a minute or 2 and she'll start back up, same thing, runs strong for about 2-3 minutes, starts to miss then, dies...

the fuel pump is running. humming right along. while she's cranking it'll shoot fuel out of the engine compartment if you depress the schraeder valve on the the rail.

while running she'll do the same thing. if you depress the schraeder valve plenty of fuel.

But, after she stalls, no pressure and very little fuel at the valve.

I put my hand on the pressure regulator, I can feel it working. are there any tests for this?

Also I don't think it's the relay, as I can hear it click on and off during it's "prime" cycle, so that would lead me to believe that the ECM is ok too, as that is what supplies the "prime" cycle...

I am using a Walbro pump.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!

Just went out and checked the fuel cap, no vacuum... should I try pinching off the return line to check the regulator?

Thanks again!

Oh, and they don't show the same fuel system that I have in the Rave Manual... my fuel pump relay is somewhere in the cab, under the glovebox?

Does anyone know where the relay may be in a 95 Disco 1?

Have you replaced the fuel filter? That's the only thing I can think of that you haven't already covered.

The fuel cap and missing vacuum will cause the CEL to come on but I can't imagine it would cause it to stall like you're describing.

I think I heard pressure should always be 35psi but I know on mine when I kill it the pressure is gone. Seems like it's getting injected, burned or leaking

no Check Engine Light.

It's a 1995, so all the OBDII problems shouldn't exist.

new filter, new pump, new strainer...

it still has OBD-I codes that might not trip the CEL or your CEL might not be working check your code box under passenger seat.

check the pressure at the filter like the RAVE says see what readings you get.

This very well could be a alarm fault.

The hissing at the fuel cap should be a positive pressure. not a vacumn.

f you have a slight pressure leak, like where the lines enter the top piece of the fuel pump assembly, that could be part of the problem. I recently replaced my entire fuel pump assembly with a brand new from Rovers North for $105 due to leakage at the top of the assembly.
Below is a pic of my old one. The plastic had cracked at the return side.
With new pump assembly, mine maintains excellent pressure at the gas cap.

I would suggest that you go down to Harbor Freight and get a cheap fuel pressure tester. Watch the pressure and see if it goes down while it is dying. From there, I would put a meter on the fuel pump leads to see if the pump is getting juice. It may just be that the new pump is overheating and shutting down.
