Default "m" and "s" flashing . . . how bad is it?

'03 Discovery SE7
54,500 miles

Started up this morning, put in drive headed out the driveway.
looked down and saw "m" and "s" flashing.
stopped turned off, restarted twice, stillflashing.

Parked it and took my wife's car to work.
She triedto se eif it would reset later started and stopped 3 times, said there was an awful smell.
turnedit off and walked away.

It's being towed to the dealer tomorrow.
Any thoughts on how bad this could be?

Low battery voltage.
Either your battery is bad or the alternator.

The bad smell was probally the starter overheating from the truck being started and re-started so many times in such a short amount of time.

Usually it's little electrical problem with gear sensor, wich gave fault error to the computer.

Just start, put D or R gear and go for ride. Probably after a while You can see the error again. Restart the engine and continue.

If its getting annoying, go to service.

Did you check fuse 12 and fuse 24 under hood and below steering respectively. I cannot remember which one of the two will also cause the engine not to start and it will flash the two lights on the dash. Assume one is blown and it gets replaced, this will cause the vehicle to start in limp home mode and in less than 50 yards, it will reset and go to normal shift pattern.
