Default $9 bearing vs $45 pulley

While replacing the serp belt and tracking down a coolant leak, I decided to replace the idler pulleys. Cheapest I found was $45/ea for the 80mm. So I pulled the bearing out, measured it, and found them online for $9/ea plus shipping. Size is ID20mm x OD 52mm x 15mm Thickness

I think I paid about $12 at NAPA for mine about 5 years ago. They've really gone up.

Great info. I'm curious which closure type you used, rubber or metal. I've got some noises that sound like idler bearings going bad but haven't looked at 'em yet.

I haven't ordered them yet, as I'm hoping the one place in town that sells bearings will have them in stock(yea, right). But, if I order them, I will get the rubber seals. I honestly don't know the diff. But I have never seen/used metal sealed bearings. That was the first I saw them.

When I replaced the one on my '98, I got it pretty cheap. But the '04 has 2 diff sizes listed, 70mm for $25(from AB) or an 80mm for $45. Of course both mine are 80mm.

I was half tempted to try the 70mm and see if it would work, but I was worried about the centering being off.

I thought it must have been something like that, 'cause they said they had no listing for an '04 Disco.

But, I did end up getting the bearings at my local store($6 and change/ea) and poped 'em in.

The only prblem with just replacing the bearing is that now you have a great ebaring inside a pulley that is getting brittle. I have seen the pulley shatter on the back side and tear up the belt. For a couple $ more just get the universal pulley from Napa or O'Reilly's or whoever. Just take in teh pulley and they will match it with a universal one. Peice of mind in my opinion.
