It’s been 6½ years since the last oil change
Redrover is driven very little - just a bit over 5000 miles since Oct 2019, all quite gentle miles. I’ll be changing the oil soon, and I wonder if it’s worth spending $40 for a Blackstone oil analysis, just out of curiosity. She gets Rotella T4 15W40 with a WIX 51515 filter. What do y’all think? Would it be a waste of $40? Thanks.
Here's my opinion. I think oil analysis helps to spot trends, compare the last one (or two or three) with the new one. If you don't have one from before, and the next one will be 5 years from now, then probably not worth the trouble or expense.
This is the oil analysis report from the last time I did one on Jackie. If you read it she would seem to be on deaths door. That was 65k miles ago, still runs like a top. I have learned to not put too much faith in the oil analysis.
Yeah I think on an expensive or “modern” engine it is worth it. But on an engine designed in the 50s that has multiple fish to fry in terms of “issues” (all well known) and still a decent supply of cost effective replacements out there, it doesn’t seem you would get any appreciable input. I mean, $40 isn’t enough to matter and doesn’t even cover a tank of fuel, but I’ve resolved to drive my latest one until it blows up (possible slipped liner or a lifter issue) all while building another engine on a stand in the background.
