Default Oil change intervals

My truck only gets about 5k miles every six months at the most. Given this is the average miles suggested between oil changes is there a need to do it on a shorter timeline or will having the same oil in her 6 months at a time be a none issue.

Thanks I'm advance.

I wouldnt worry about it.
If you wanted you could change the oil every 3 months and then the oil and filter every 6.
So it would be like this...oil change, oil and filter change, oil change, oil and filter change,. and so on.
But personally, living where you do, I would just use Rotella 15w-40, NAPA Gold oil filter and change it every 5,000 miles and not worry about it.
If you lived someplace with big season changes like I do, then I would worry about it.

The info is Much appreciated. I'll get on that regiment with my next change and just stick to the 5K mark.

If you're using a full synthetic then definitely nothing to worry about.
For dino oil I do every 3,000. It's only one additional oil change a year so not a lot of dollars.

If you are going to have the truck for a while, you could spend the $20 or so and have the oil tested at the next change. They will tell you if you should have it changed more often or if you can extend it. Besides that, it will give you great info on the oil. I'm a big fan of knowing what is going on "behind the scenes" of what I could possibly see in an engine! I use Blackstone Labs.
In my opinion though, like mentioned, if you use full syn then 5K and/or 6 months should be cool if you are not beating the heck out of the truck.

Sounds like your on the right track but I would never trust oil, even synthetic. Use the test kit to check your oil in between your scheduled oil changes. It's not so much viscosity break down that can damage a engine it's the absence of the detergent. Without this the motor will build up deposits within the system and wear on vital internal moving parts. Also test your antifreeze on a schedule and flush and refill system, many people including myself have flushed the dexcool from the system and converted to green, this will save gaskets and seals since dexcool constantly needs to be balanced out and tested for high Ph levels. Your climate is a warm one so your schedule looks good, just test in between. Good luck FightonUSC 79.

There's some really good info at Bobs the Oil Guy about oil and what really happens when as you pile on the miles. Contradicts a number of common things people "know" about oil.
