Today I replaced the heated element in my drivers side seat (yay for a warm bottom!) and swapped out the amp while the seat was out. The PO of my truck let water get in and I was having some audio issues and was able to pick up a cheap amp. I flipped over the metal plate to get the old amp out and I found the transmission control unit had a hole corroded through it and a penny underneath also totally corroded! The two metals, plus some water over a long period of time ate away at each other. Just goes to show you’ll never know what you’ll find in these trucks!
Well at least that explains why the seat heater wasn’t working...
That's totally interesting. I'm fascinated - constantly - by galvanic corrosion on classic Range Rovers and Defenders... so interesting where and how it happens. The penny is a new one!
I wasn't sure what I was looking at at first. I initially thought it was rust but the housing is aluminum. That's when I saw the remains of the penny which had severely corroded and had to look up galvanic corrosion between copper and aluminum and yep, its pretty severe! Add in that great PNW rain and a (formerly) leaky truck and it was easy to put together.
