01 disco 2 service engine light not working
i have a 01 disco 2 gas engine .
when i turn the switch on the yellow service engine soon light does not come on .
is this normal ?
when i read with a code reader it says the check engine light is on with 4 o2 sensor codes .
but no light on dash .
trying to figure out how to get light working again .
was not working when purchased .
help !

That's one of the things on the list to check before you purchase one of these... It was probably disabled by a previous owner when they traded it in or sold it to you. Crappy but true.
You will have to take the dash binnacle off and look on the PC board where the LED is located and see if it is just unhooked or taped over.

3 options here, #1 LED burned out = very very rare, but not impossible. #2 someone just used some black electrical tape on the inside of the gauge cluster film. Or #3 which I just came across on my 02 Westminster with the 3 Amigo’s not illuminating which is some careless cheap idiot just ripped the LED’s from the gauge cluster which is very $$$ to repair without the proper scantool or spare parts. I had to rebuild the cluster with a replacement PCB with lower miles on it, then SYNC it to the BCU using my NANOCOM LR Specific scan tool.
You can carefully take out the cluster, and then break it down into sections. Then you can inspect the SES LED to see if it’s just covered up or the LED is missing.
***In the pic above you can see the torn off LED’s on the bottom left***
no.
you seem to be looking for an answer that you're not going to get. either someone has put tape over the inside of the instrument cluster, or the led has been damaged or removed.
removing the cluster binnacle is not difficult, and should give you your answer.

Although the dash cluster is a printed circuit, it is still supplied references voltages and grounds from the ECM or other sources...through a wiring harness. So yes, you could potentially cut the wire from the ECM that controls the SES/CEL light. Normally, the ECM controls the ground circuit of the light, grounding bulb when diagnostic code or issue is present. But, seeing that this is Lucas wiring...they probably have two gremlins with a match working the system.
However, most likely...you'll find some electrical tape or black silicone in the chamber containing the bulb in cluster.
Back in the day, before the LED bulb and fiberoptics...you supplied 18 volts (hooking up two 9 volt batteries in series) to the circuit through the diagnostic port...burning out the bulb. Life was so simple back then...lol.

pin #20 of connector 4 (c0637) on the ecm is the switched ground for the malfunction indicator light, so i guess it would actually be possible for someone to track down which specific wire that becomes, and cut it somewhere on its journey across to the instrument panel. apparently the wire is red/slate when it comes out of the ecm behind the fascia panels.
a piece of tape seems far more likely.
