Does the Discovery key have a chip that communicates with the car at start up like some other cars do? If not can I simply go into a locksith and have key made?

You can have a new key cut, it will be just a regular blank key but what the heck it will work.
If you want a new remote, buy one off E-Bay, get the key code number from your dealer, have it cut, then go to the dealer and have them program in your new remote along with your old one. Only two remotes can be set up to be used on your truck at any one time.
