Default 03 4.6 eating oil.. any known problems?

After 2000 miles from my last oil change, I pulled the dip stick to check the oil and found out that there is only about 1/2" oil on the dip stick....
I----------------------I-----------------x------I
Full------------------Add----------------------Bottom of dipstick

Seems like its eating alot for a truck that only has 55K on it. Is this a common problem???

I had the same problem,,,Actually I was losing 1 qt. per 2-3 days!!! Dealer told me that Land Rover says that 1 qt. per 1000 miles is an "accepatble/normal amount to lose"!(unbelieveable) I had my intake gaskets replaced because of massive coolant leak and oddly enough, my excessive oil consumption has ceased. I have gone almost 1000 miles since intake gaskets were replaced and dipstick level remains full!

Is the oil foamy or milky at all?

Did you check it again cold? If you haven't had regular changes, and your motor is gunked up, it will take a bit for the oil to drain back into the pan.

Scrub you engine and look for a leak..

You could eat off the engine its that clean... no leaks

Oil level is checked in the morning after sitting all night.

Oil looks dirty, not totally black just dirty.... not milky or foamy

"Dealer told me that Land Rover says that 1 qt. per 1000 miles is an "accepatble/normal amount to lose" -- So it the dealer recommends that and they recommend a 7500 mile oil change.. then its ok to lose 7 qts of oil over 7000 miles?????? Especially when it only has 6 qts... This boggles me!

Don't go over 5K on your drains. Are you saying the dealer told you 7500 for the oil change? These engines run dirty due to the design. I think the 4.6 is better, but still based off the old 1960's Buick V-8. High carbon, especially if you don't run premium.

Do you have any kind of warranty left?

Take it back in. Let them change the oil and monitor. The more write ups you have under warranty, the better chance you have of them fixing it after warranty.

Get it in there, I hear LR and Jag are boing sold to a company in India....

If it uses 1 quart every 1000 miles and you change it every 7500 then all you need to do is change the filter right? lol
Still under warranty I would put up a fight.
Mine uses 2 quarts for the first 1500 miles AFTER I change the oil and none for the rest of the 3500 miles.
