'03 Discovery HSE - Engine Smell, Engine Sluggish, & Loud Engine
Happy New Year everyone,
I'm fairly new to the Disco experience as I've only owned my 2003 Discovery HSEsince October of this year. It had a one year warranty from the LR dealer and I purchased another 3 year warranty at the time of purchase. Because of this, I'm not too concerned aboutgetting the service performed, but I'd like to have some understanding of the potential issues before heading to the dealer as I've noticed some reluctance from the dealer in perform true diagnostic work (I don't think they're a world-class dealer).
Here's a quick run-down of what I'm facing:
SMELL:I've noticed a slight smell of burning oil(or maybecoolant leaking?) upon exiting the vehicle after15+ minutes of driving.Several friends and a few valets havementioned the smell as well, so I'm pretty sure I'm not making something out of nothing. Is this smellstandard for the 4.6 liter engine? If it's in fact oil, it'snot burning at an alarm rate as the LR shop didn't notice low oil levels the last time it was serviced. I've read about coolant system issues from other forum users, but I'm not sure if this is a common symptom of that category of problem.
SLUGGISHNESS: Over the holiday break I drove a friend's 2003 Discovery SEand immediately noticed that that his had more engine "pep", with faster acceleration and responsiveness. It wasn't a just slight difference, but was quite obvious to me. I always use premium fuel (91+ octane)and he doesn't do anything to his Discothat I don't do in regards to service, maintenance, etc. Seemed strange.
LOUD ENGINE: My engine seems quite loud when it starts (like a diesel). It eventually quiets down a bit, but still runs fairly loud compared to other V8 engines I've heard (including other LR 4.6 liters I've heard). Some of the noise is from the fan, but not all. How loud can the engine get before I should be concerned?
Thanks for your input.
