Default 03 Oil pump failure vin range

I was doing some research on a 2003 Disco that I am thinking about purchasing and found the faulty oil pump vin range. I just have never seen it posted on here so I thought it might help some people.
2003 Disocovery Series II vin#: 3A771801-3A808362

ATTENTION: Service Manager Service Advisor Technician
2003 Discovery Series II Oil Pump Failures
Vehicles Affected
Discovery Series II (LT) 3A771801 – 3A808362
Situation
Oil pump failures on 2003 Discovery Series II vehicles may be the result of a
manufacturing error. Locating dowel pins may be slightly misaligned permitting
assembly of the oil pump to the engine block, but placing stress on the pump housing
which can ultimately lead to leakage or failure.
Resolution
Whenever an oil pump failure is encountered on vehicles within the above VIN range
the only effective repair currently available is replacement of the complete engine
assembly including the front cover/oil pump manufactured to the latest tolerances.
Use the following components to affect a repair:
• LBB112301 4.6 Engine assembly LEV
• LBB111461 4.6 Engine assembly NON-LEV

It is on here alot.

Does it only apply to the V8 engine? Or also the TD5?

Thanks

Thank you, Disco Mike.

I'm sorry if I've struck a nerve(!) I'm new here and meant it innocently!

The VIN on my newly-acquired TD5 is within that above quoted range, hence my concern.

Thanks for posting this...wish I had seen this when I was looking for my Disco...

I do have a question about this failure, and have tried searching the archives/web for a definitive answer, without success, so please bear with me if it's been answered and I haven't found it. From what I can tell, if the Disco is affected with this dowel alignment issue, then the oil pump seems to fail fairly early on in engine life. (From what I can gather usually less that 60K) Is this correct, or is it a crap shoot for the life of the engine?

cheers,
rich

Thumbs down

I can't wait for this issue to take the value of the 03's down to um... about 200-500 bucks and I will buy all of them.... I can't believe rover admitted to the issue but won't deal with it... I think we all should take time and drive our disco's through the front doors of every land rover stealership out there to make a valid public appearance/point... I have an idea, lets go buy a quality high dollar vehicle so we the GP can get screwed in the long run..
