Hey what is they vin range? I'm looking at an 03. I've seen everyone refer to the vin range but never what they actually range is

Situation
Oil pump failures on 2003 Discovery Series II vehicles may be the result of a
manufacturing error. Locating dowel pins may be slightly misaligned permitting
assembly of the oil pump to the engine block, but placing stress on the pump housing
which can ultimately lead to leakage or failure.
Resolution
Whenever an oil pump failure is encountered on vehicles within the above VIN range
the only effective repair currently available is replacement of the complete engine
assembly including the front cover/oil pump manufactured to the latest tolerances.
Use the following components to affect a repair:
• LBB112301 4.6 Engine assembly LEV
• LBB111461 4.6 Engine assembly NON-LEV

 

The disco that I had my eye on is in that vin range and priced right at 6k. Is it best to just avoid it?

 

Man, that seems to be kind of high, unless it is in pristine condition. Mine had 102000 miles and not in range, very good condition, new head gaskets, tires and I paid 2500.

 

No where near pristine. I'm in the upstate of SC and everything I've found that isn't absolute junk is right around 5k.

 

I guess there are so many in the Central Tx area, price is cheaper. Either way, good luck with you purchase, I have loved mine.

 

How much you spend on a rover depends on how badly (and desperate) you are to have one. (Find my thread about me almost purchasing a salvaged title Disco for 9k) be smart, be realistic. With any year discovery, your going to have to drop money in it to get it where you want it. Budget a couple thousand for repairs and enjoy whatever you buy for however much you get it for. But my best advice for you is don't be in a hurry to purchase. There will always be a craigslist deal somewhere

 

As stated on here and other forums probably a thousand times, after 12 years and 100000 miles you should not be worrying about the VIN issue.

If it had it, its fixed by now or it would not still be driving.

That being said, Oil pumps in trucks NOT made in 2003 and NOT in the VIN range break as well.
