I agree with the others that u need to clean off the engine. Then add engine oil dye, drive it a bit and check for the source with a blacklite or dyelite. this way is more accurate in diagnosing your leak.

put a thin coat of black RTV on both side of the gasket, there is no need for them to leak.
I will do this today as well. It looks to be from the pan. Only started after a 2.5 drive to the mountains. I will try to tighten the bolts slightly

The plug next to the oil filter that doesn't seat itself all the way can leak pretty good. Mine is on my 04 and it is running down the pan. Next time I change the oil I'm gonna take it out and wrap some Teflon tape on there, should fix it. You might wanna give it a look and make sure it's not from there and running down the side of your pan.

Agreed...this may be the culprit. Heading to NAPA for Black RTV

Dye is the key. The fan and gravity will distort the location even if you clean it off. Dye don't lie!

Ended up being timing cover gasket on the passenger side. Going to replace the water pump while my mechanic is down there as well..good idea?

The timing cover job allows several other fun things: A kit of about $115 includes the $7 gasket, a new front seal, water pump gasket, and a set of oil pump gears. Worth doing the oil pump.

When replacing the pump consider an upgrade one that has a bronze impeller, like from BP Utah.

Replace fan clutch. Clutch and water pump have been dancing for millions of spins around the dance floor, and know each other, warts and all. hey have worn old together and are a perfect fit. Toss a new one in the mix and the old part will wear more rapidly.

While oil pan is off, clean pickup, replace pickup tube gasket, and two dabs of loctite on the bolt threads of the pickup.

Careful with this, I ordered this gasket as per Buzz's advice: GASKET OIL STRAINER-BLOCK V-8 3.5/3.9/4., RNM062, ERR3788 - Rovers North - Classic Land Rover Parts

Turns out my 2001 Discovery 2 does not have a gasket on the oil pick up!! It's an o-ring!

You can see the second graphic of the newer oil pan assembly in the lower right of this:

Why rovers north doesn't appear to sell this o-ring I don't know. Bought it from O-Ring Oil Pickup - 4.0/4.6 Engine (Genuine Part # ERR4794) - Land Rover gaskets and seals from Atlantic British
