use your cell phone.
Video the engine with the noise.
Put the video on you tube.
Then put the link in this thread.
Then we can tell you our opinions.

The noise could be anything, without hearing the noise its hard to tell.
With the unknown engine noise its worth no more than $2000.
The '04 engines are junk, I would not buy one.

have an independent land rover mechanic look at it, the noise could be something or something small, that's were the IRM comes in.
Not all 04 are just some are perfectly fine, I would they were the prettiest of the DII. Vehicle history if you can locate and a pre inspection is your best bet.

When you look at the truck, take a yard stick or board. Hold flat side against your ear. Touch other end to spots under the hood (power steering pump, alternator, valve covers). This will help localize the sound. Be sure to check when cold, and again when fully warmed up. Always act surprised and concerned about what you hear, and keep negotiating, even if you have to use the stick to beat him down on the price.

But, if new to Rovers, and the delights found under the hood, trust a mechanic, it can save you thousands in a mistake that SWMBO will never let you forget.....

Not necessarily, got mine for 5k with a rebuilt engine. Some people, like my PO, just get sick of them. Mine had an exhaust leak when I bought it, and she didn't want to deal with getting the noise checked out, lol. It happens. This could just be a misfire due to plugs, wires, or coil. Get it checked out OP, and maybe you'll get a good deal.

I bought a Porsche 914 for $400 because it was taking up too much space in a customer's garage. I sold it a month later (to a Porsche Dealership!) for $9000 because it was a special version.

Once in a great while, there's a good deal to be had. On a Rover, I'd be more suspicious, but it's still possible.

Best deal ever was $2000 for a D2 with 117 garage kept miles on it by an eccentric owner. However, Murphy's Law comes in a multi-volume set for Rovers......
